In early action on Sunday a pair of Swedish clubs, Lulea Hockey and Frölunda Gothenburg, won on home ice to guarantee at least a share of first place in their groups after four rounds. A third Swedish club, Djurgarden Stockholm, dropped a shootout decision to Eisbären Berlin, while Lukko Rauma shut out Hamburg. Another Finnish club, JYP Jyväskylä, won in overtime in Kloten.
Kloten Flyers 2–3 JYP Jyväskylä (OT)
The Kloten Flyers get their first point in the CHL, but their hopes of advancing past the group stage are finished as JYP Jyväskylä wins in overtime. Kloten led 2-0 after one period but JYP battled back with one goal in the second, one in the third, and then Aleksi Salonen scored in overtime. JYP now has seven points, which puts them temporarily into first place in Group I, pending the outcome of Salzburg-HV71.
"We were sitting back a little too much in the first period," said JYP captain Eric Perrin, who had one assist. "We let them get some speed and they did a good job putting pressure on us and creating some mistakes from our side and they took advantage two times but I think we turned the tables in the second and third period and we came back harder. We started putting on the pressure and skating. You saw the difference in the game, we started creating a lot of chances for ourselves and that was the key."
"We dominated the first period,"Kloten's Marcel Jenni said. "We skated a lot, played the puck a lot, all those things that we wanted to do for 60 minutes. Afterwards we just watched the opponent, let them take over the game. It’s not a big secret that if you stop playing, skating, that can’t go well."
Lukko Rauma 5–0 Hamburg Freezers
Teemu Nurmi scored two goals, Toni Koivisto tallied three points and Ryan Zapolski posted a 17-save shutout as Lukko Rauma beat the Hamburg Freezers 5-0 on home ice. With the win, Lukko keeps even with Lulea atop Group K - both teams are perfect with 12 points and will face each other in the last two games to decide the winner.
"We battled very well in the beginning," said Hamburg goalie Dmitrij Kotschnew, who stopped 21 of 26 shots. "But if you're already decimated in the game and then you take too many penalties, it's going to have an effect at some point. This Rauma team has more options and then when they get their chances they take advantage very efficiently."
Eisbären Berlin 4–3 Djurgården Stockholm (SO)
Petr Pohl figured in on all of Eisbären Berlin's scoring with two goals and one assist in regulation time plus the shootout winner, as his team earned its first win in the CHL. Meanwhile, Joakim and Henrik Eriksson each recorded two points for Djurgarden, whose single point moves them to within two of the Group D lead behind Fribourg-Gottéron and PSG Zlín.
"You want to bring the feeling of winning into the new season, so hopefully thats what we're taking from the victory today into the new season," said Pohl, Berlin's hero of the day. "The Champions Hockey League prepares you really well for the national league and gives you an advantage over the teams who are not playing in the CHL. We have seen today that we can win against good European teams like Djurgarden. It's great to see that we can play on a level with those guys."
"These were difficult games against Eisbären," said Djurgarden assistant coach Stefan Nyman, referring to this game and the Djurgarden's slim 3-2 home-ice win on Game Day 2. "Even though we lost today, we were able to show that it's really hard to beat us."
Luleå Hockey 9–1 Nottingham Panthers
After beating Nottingham 10-1 on Game Day 2, Lulea followed it up with a 9-1 beating on Game Day 4 as they remain perfect with 12 points. Daniel Zaar scored twice and added and assist while Lucas Wallmark had a goal and two assists.
Frölunda Gothenburg 5–2 Villach SV
After a 1-1 first period, Frölunda Gothenburg scored twice in the second period and went on to beat Villach SV 5-2. With nine points, they move into a tie with Geneve-Servette atop Group C. Artturi Lehkonen scored twice on the power play, while Cramo Top Scorer Mathis Olimb recorded four points to take over the tournament scoring lead.
