The Rouen Dragons still had the slimmest of chances to advance to the Round of 32 heading into their first CHL home game against HC Davos, and they needed to win in regulation time to keep those hopes alive. They didn't, instead losing 3-2 in overtime, but they earned their first CHL point and did their fans proud with a monstrous effort.
After getting outplayed by a wide margin in both Stockholm and Davos and relying on goalie Dany Sabourin to keep the scores close, they out-shot Davos 40-30 this game, and came flying out of the blocks in the first period, urged on by their rabid fans. However, it was Davos that struck first, with Dino Wieser scoring on a breakaway with 1:11 left in the first period. Then early in the second they made it 2-0 on a 4-on-3 power play – Perttu Lindgren finishing off a pretty give-and-go – and it looked like the Swiss club might really pull away from them.
The defending French and Continental Cup champs dug down deep, however, and battled back. First Sacha Treille got them on the board, driving hard to the net and re-directing Marc-Antre Thiel's pass through Joren van Pottelberghe's legs to make it 2-1 after two periods. Then they tied it on the power play in the third, on another nice set-up from Thiel, this time finding Loic Lamperier with 12:29 left in regulation time, and turning Ile Lacroix into a madhouse.
In the first minute of overtime, Sabourin made a huge save to keep it alive, but Davos went to the power play and defenceman Felicien Dubois finished the game with a great shot just under the crossbar.
"That was a good game, a hard one, but we managed to get the win," said Davos coach Arno del Curto. "It was a great atmosphere here when Rouen pulled the game back and then tied it up. We didn't play well, took too many penalties – enough for about seven games – but in the end we got the win."
Despite the loss, and the elimination of any possibility they will advance to the next stage, the Rouen fans gave their team a thunderous standing ovation at the end of the game. They have one more chance, on Saturday against Djurgarden, to get their first win.
