Heading into Group O's last game, the only thing to be decided was the group winner, and Farjestad Karlstad left little doubt about that with a 7-0 win over Comarch Cracovia. A pair of Asplunds led the offence – Per with two goals and one assist and Rasumus with three assists. Per's linemate Alexander Johansson also had a three-point game with a goal and two helpers. Lars Haugen made 26 saves for the shutout.
Rafal Radziszewski was once again a busy man in the Cracovia net, facing 51 shots overall – 18 in the first period. The only one to beat him in the opening frame was by John Persson at 4:20, finishing off a back-door play after a nice pass from Marcus Nilsson. Per Asplund made it 2-0 early in the second from right in front of the net, and right after that Haugen made his best save of the game, denying captain Christian Dziubinski from close range. Then Tim Stapleton made it 3-0 in the 34th minute, just seven seconds into a power play.
At the end of the second period, the score was still respectable but the outcome wasn't really in doubt. Farjestad added four goals in the third period to win in convincing style.
"It feels very good," said Farjestad coach Leif Carlsson. "We were working on implementing many little details today, so it was kind of a mental game for us today. Being focused and winning this game in a positive way. We know that we are the better team, so much of the challenge is on the mental side. And we did it in a very good way."
Asked which of his players have impressed him the most so far, he answered, "I think many players have been at a good level. Par Aslund, who scored here this evening, his play has been at a good level, and that's the level we want him to be on. I think it's exciting to see Tim Stapleton, who's only been with us a couple of weeks, is already producing. The youngsters have also done well. Nobody has played below par, and that is the most imprtant thing at this stage."
Undeterred by the mounting score against them, the large contingent of Cracovia fans in attendance were loud throughout. Although they didn't get a goal to cheer about, they gave their team a nice ovation as they left the ice for the last time this year in the CHL.
“It was a good atmostphere. Our fans were great,” said Cracovia coach Rudolf Ruhacek. About the game and his team's CHL experience overall, he said, “We didn't do what we expected of ourselves – it was a high loss – but they're a great team. We don't often play teams on that level. We've now seen that level and it was a good experience for the guys – we know where we have to get better.”
