In Tuesday's slate of early games, four Finnish squads secured berths in the playoff round. SaiPa Lappeenranta, Tappara Tampere and Lukko Rauma won their groups, while IFK Helsinki will be one of the five second-place teams to advance. As well, the Vaxjo Lakers are in a good position with 12 points but their fate is not yet decided.
Lukko Rauma 2–0 Lulea Hockey
Lukko Rauma needed a win by at least two goals to win Group K and that's exactly what they got. After a scoreless first period, Harri Tikkanen and Jesper Piitulainen gave the Finnish squad the margin of victory they needed in the second. Lulea put on enormous pressure in the third period but Oskari Setanen stopped all 15 shots he faced that period, and all 28 in the game, to preserve the shutout. The night is not a disaster for Lulea, however, as they'd already secured a berth in the "sweet 16".
"We were weak on the power play and penalty kill and Lukko made us pay. We had a chance to win the whole group and we gave it away. I'm disappointed about that," Lulea defenceman Kristian Nakyva said, despite the fact that his team had already clinched a playoff spot. The former Lukko blueliner added, “When I moved to Lulea, I wanted a new challenge and a fresh start. When I got a chance to go, I didn’t think twice. There was good three-year period with JYP Jyvaskyla and I got the feeling that I wanted something new.”
IFK Helsinki 5–3 Skelleftea AIK
With Group J already wrapped up, Skelleftea AIK played a loose game in Helsinki and fell 5–3 to an IFK squad that needed the win to advance as a second place wild-card. Corey Eakins scored twice in the first period and completed his hat-trick in the dying seconds into an empty net. Sebastian Aho assisted on all three Skelleftea goals.
"Tough game," IFK coach Antti Tormanen simply stated. "Many of our players played their best game of the season and that was needed to get the victory. Skelleftea is a very good team. We had a horrible start and were in back on our heels but we managed to kill the second penalty and then scored a goal. In third period we struggled a bit but (goaltender Ville) Husso was the right man in the right spot."
KalPa Kuopio 1–3 Vaxjo Lakers
Hometown Kuopio's Tuomas Kiiskinen opened the scoring in the ninth minute, assisted on the second goal two minutes later, and the Vaxjo Lakers led 3–0 after one period. After that they cruised to a 3–1 win on the road to bring their total to 12 points in Group G. That now means that Sparta Prague must get three points on Wednesday to take the group title from Vaxjo.
"We came hard into this game and we really wanted to win. The first period was solid, but in the second we took way too many penalties," said Kiiskinen. When asked about the goal he scored in his former home rink he said, "It was exciting for me to play in my hometown. I didn't know whether I should cheer or not."
"We didn't stick together and weren't ready for tonight's game. Of course we have a lot of young guys in our line-up and that has some influence on our game,"KalPa head coach Pekka Virta said after what turned out to be the team's last CHL game of the season. "The whole CHL has been a really good experience for us and next year we'll be more ready."
Tappara Tampere 5–1 Ocelari Trinec
Trailing by four points with two games left, Tappara Tampere took the maximum six points in the last two weeks to overtake Ocelari Trinec and win Group E. This one in Tampere wasn't particularly close, as the home side scored twice in the first and twice in the second period before the teams traded goals in the third. Pekka Jormakka scored two goals and assisted on the winning goal late in the first period.
"We had a weak moment when it was 2–0 and we couldn’t find the right momentum. Trinec got a few unnecessary scoring chances. We lost pucks and played badly at that time. We had a little over-enthusiasm," said Tappara head coach Jussi Tapola, who didn't think his team was as dominant as the score indicates. "All in all 5–1 was maybe a bit too much, but we have had games where the score should have been different from our point of view when looking at scoring chances and so forth."
Vitkovice Ostrava 1–3 SaiPa Lappeenranta
gVitkovice Ostrava took a 1–0 lead into the third period on home ice, but SaiPa Lappeenranta scored three times in the last eight minutes – the last goal into the empty net – to make it a 3–1 final. Dave Spina scored the winning goal with 5:01 on the clock and Rony Ahonen scored the other two. With the win, SaiPa finishes first in Group H.
"It feels good," said Spina, who now has seven points in six CHL games to lead SaiPa offensively. "I wasn't too worried about scoring the winner; we just wanted to move on so it feels good. There are a lot of strong teams in our group. I'm happy that my line's playing really well with David McIntyre and Tommi Jokinen and we're winning games, that's the most important thing."
"We knew we were playing a very strong team. They lead the Finnish league," Vitkovice coach Peter Oremus said. "It’s very positive we were able to stay with them throughout the game, but it’s too bad we lost in the end. We can take a lot of positives from this game but we need to score more goals. You can’t win against a team like that with only one goal.“
