You know that there are 44 CHL teams and they'll play in 11 groups, but how will the groups be decided? Read more to find out.
On May 21st in Minsk, the Champions Hockey League will conduct a Draw to determine the groups for the 2014/2015 season. The 44 clubs have already been ranked and placed into four baskets of 11 teams each.
Click here to see the ranking criteria, and which teams are in which baskets.
One team from each basket will end up in each of the eleven groups, which will be lettered A to K on a table from left to right. In the end, each group will have four teams, and no two teams from the same country can be grouped together.
Basket 1 will be drawn first, with the first team drawn placed into Group A. The procedure will continue in alphabetical order, left to right, until the basket is empty and all 11 groups have one team. The same procedure will then be done for Baskets 2, 3 and 4.
As previously mentioned, no group can contain more than one club from any particular country. This is called the “national conflict” rule. In the event a team is drawn into a group that already has a team from that country, it will be placed in the next group, immediately to the right, or as many places are necessary to avoid a “national conflict”. If, when approaching the end of a basket, it reaches a point where only one basket option remains for a particular team to avoid a “national conflict”, the team will be automatically placed into that group.
If and when this situation occurs, the Draft Supervisor will clearly explain it to the audience as the team is manually placed into the non-conflicting group. If there are two teams left in a basket and one team faces a possible “national conflict”, the remaining two teams will be manually placed into the two remaining groups so that no conflict occurs.
For the purposes of this “national conflict” rule, HC Sudtirol Bolzano, champions of the Austrian-based EBEL, are considered an Italian club, so they can be grouped with an Austrian club without any conflict.
We will have live coverage of the Draw on Wednesday, May 21st at 13:00 local time in Minsk, 12:00 Central European Time.
