At any level of hockey, your team is only as good as the the netminder you have backstopping it. But nowhere is that more important than in the Champions Hockey League Final.
We’ve already looked at the captains and the coaches. Now, we turn our attention to the men between the pipes.
Jussi Olkinuora has been JYP Jyväskylä’s regular starter in the CHL this season, having joined the team from SaiPa Lappeenranta over the summer. The Helsinki native has also been the team’s preferred choice in the Liiga until now too. In eight European matches this season, Olkinuora has saved 92.44 percent of the shots he’s faced – notching 208 saves over 435 minutes. Notably, of course, he saved all of Oceláři Třinec’s penalty shots in the Semi-Final return game. The 27-year-old has AHL experience from 21 games with the St. John’s IceCaps and Manitoba Moose, respectively, and has a Liiga bronze medal with SaiPa from the 16/17 season.
The Lakers, on the other hand, have tended to split netminding duties in the CHL so far between experienced Viktor Fasth and young Viktor Andrén. Fasth, a World Championship gold medalist from 2017, re-joined the Lakers after a period overseas in the NHL with Anaheim and Edmonton, and most recently two seasons in the KHL with CSKA Moscow. In five CHL games, the 35-year-old has a 91.94 save percentage. Andrén, 23, has played 419 minutes in the CHL this season across eight games. With 149 saves, he has a save percentage of 89.22 during his second season with the Lakers.
