The CHL Sport Disciplinary Panel has ruled to suspend Mark Barberio (#45) of HC Bolzano, who at time 39:54, was involved in an incident deemed as a “Butt-Ending” (IIHF Rule 58). The video evidence has determined the incident to be worthy of supplementary discipline under Category 1 – “Careless”.
According to the Arbitrator and having considered the video evidence and ruling of the CHL PSC, Mark Barberio (#45) of HC Bolzano, will receive supplementary discipline under IIHF Rule 58 – Butt-Ending.
Wednesday night, Bolzano player #45 Mark Barberio used an illegal action, deemed as Butt-Ending, against Ingolstadt D-Man #55 Edwin Tropmann in which he was assessed a Major Penalty and an automatic Game Misconduct.
As the video shows, immediately after Tropmann passed the puck, he skated to open ice. Located behind and recognizing that Tropmann has open ice, Barberio skates into a lateral position with Tropmann. When the 2 players physically engaged, Barberio lowered his top/right hand down the shaft of his stick, exposing the butt-end portion. Once exposed, Barberio used the end of his stick to forcefully jab Tropmann in the mid-section.
This is Butt-Ending.
It is important to note, this is not deemed an incidental type of movement or minimal movement to impede an opponent’s skating lane. The incident is delivered and deemed a deliberate jab with the top end of the stick of Barberio making solid contact to the mid-section of Tropmann. This action constitutes butt-ending as is a dangerous and deliberate use of his stick, to illegally impede Tropmann.
The CHL Sport Disciplinary Panel suspends Mark Barberio (#45) of HC Bolzano for 1 game, effective immediately, and issue a fine of €700, effective immediately. In addition, Mark Barberio (#45), will be considered a repeat offender in the event additional supplementary discipline is required within the CHL.
