With the culmination of the 2021/22 Champions Hockey League season now only 10 days away, it’s time to remind ourselves just how well our finalists, Rögle Ängelholm and Tappara Tampere, have played up to this point and compare their stats head-to-head!
Both Rögle and Tappara have been some of the deadliest teams in front of the net this season, both boasting over 40 goals scored.
Rögle have scored 44 goals this season, three more than fellow finalists Tappara, but that is in part due to the fact that Tappara only played a single game Semi-Final, whereas Rögle played a regular two-game Semi-Finals series.
Despite Tappara losing out on the most goals scored crown, the Finns have many other stats in their favour. They’ve scored slightly more goals per game than Rögle – 3.73 goals per game for Tappara compared to Rögle’s 3.67, have let two fewer goals into the back of their net compared to Rögle (27 goals against for Rögle, 25 for Tappara) and beat Rögle by a hefty margin when comparing face-offs won, despite playing one less game (381 for Tappara, 311 for Rögle).
Rögle on the other hand have an advantage in powerplay percentage, something that has been their strong suit all season long. The Swedes have a CHL-leading 42.86 powerplay percentage, which comfortably cements top spot on the 2021/22 leader board. Tappara are in fifth place with a 32.65 powerplay percentage.
Next up, games, scores and points. Rögle have a CHL-leading 29 points from 12 games, winning 10 of those (nine in regulation, one in OT) and losing only two, whereas Tappara have 24 points from 11 games.
The Finns have won six in regulation, two in OT, tied two and lost only a single game so far this season. They have also recorded two shutouts, which is two more than Rögle who have conceded in each and every game.
It's clear these two teams are in the 2021/22 Final for a reason. They have been deadly in the CHL this season and are inseparable when it comes to stats, featuring near-identical goals per game, goals against and goals scored records.
Rögle’s weapon of choice has clearly been powerplays, but they’ll have to win the puck of Tappara first, because the Finns have been lethal during face-offs and like to control the game more.
