The CHL Sport Disciplinary Panel has ruled to suspend Juhani Tyrväinen (#21) of Kölner Haie, who at time approximately 05:16, was involved in an incident deemed as a “Checking from Behind” (IIHF Rule 43). The video evidence has determined the incident to be worthy of supplementary discipline under Category 1 – “Careless”.

According to the Arbitrator and having considered the video evidence and ruling of the CHL PSC, Juhani Tyrväinen (#21) of Kölner Haie, will receive supplementary discipline under IIHF Rule 43 – Checking from Behind.

Thursday night, Köln player #21 Juhani Tyrväinen was involved in an incident deemed as checking from behind on Salzburg D-Man #62 Wyatt Kalynuk resulting in an apparent injury.

As the video shows, Köln chips the puck into the corner area causing a race for the puck with Tyrväinen following in pursuit. As the play begins to develop in the face-off area, Tyrväinen is located directly behind Kalynuk, as the 2 maintained a skating lane directly at the puck. The moment Kalynuk plays the puck, Tyrväinen delivers a hard, forceful check directly to the back of Kalynuk, causing an injury.

This is Checking from Behind.

It is important to note that Kalynuk is in no way eligible to be checked directly to the back numbers on this play. As neither player chose a path towards the boards other than directly at the boards, it is the responsibility of Tyrväinen to at minimum, alter his speed, and preferably avoid contact directly to the back of Kalynuk. In addition it is deemed Tyrväinen is aware and has time to alter such contact. The result of this play is a body check to a vulnerable player not eligible to be hit forcefully and directly from behind.

The CHL Sport Disciplinary Panel suspends Juhani Tyrväinen (#21) of Kölner Haie for 1 game, effective immediately, and issue a fine of €700, effective immediately. In addition, Juhani Tyrväinen (#21), will be considered a repeat offender in the event additional supplementary discipline is required within the CHL.
