There have been some brilliant performances through the opening stage of this year’s Champions Hockey League, with players impressing across all teams. However, only a select few can earn the right to be named on the Team of the Regular Season. Here's our pick of the ultimate six-player line-up:
GK - Matthew Greenfield
Sheffield Steelers goaltender Matthew Greenfield was our go-to choice for the position of goaltender on our Team of the Regular Season. Why, you ask? Having lined up for all six of his team's games this season, he's been in net for all four of the EIHL team's wins and more often than not played a decisive role in the games.
Greenfield made nearly 200 saves across the Regular Season, letting an average of just over two goals hit the back of the net per game. His resulting save average of over 93% ranks him as one of the best in the league when filtering through goalies who played five or more games over the course of the first phase of the 2024/25 season.
When analysing the 29-year-old goalie's game, look no further than his most recent outing against strong Czech Extraliga side Dynamo Pardubice where the Florida native made crucial saves in the game to seal Sheffield's Game Day 6 win, ending the night with a 96% save percentage. D - Dennis Eamon Robertson
Red Bull Salzburg's Dennis Eamon Robertson is exactly the type of tough, hard-hitting and high-scoring D-man any team needs. The experienced 33-year-old blueliner is in his third CHL season with Salzburg and has been better than ever in the first phase of Europe's biggest club ice hockey competition.
Eight points (2G, 4A), six hits, six blocked shots, one powerplay goal and nearly 22 minutes of average ice time, all while taking just four penalty minutes in six games, perfectly explain why this mighty Canadian defenceman is on our six-man Team of the Regular Season.
D - Jonathan Pudas
With two goals and three assists in five games, Skellefteå AIK's Jonathan Pudas may not be the highest-scoring defenceman of the Regular Season, but in his case, it's not just his current numbers we're after.
The blueliner is in his sixth CHL season right now, playing each and every one of them in the black-and-yellow of Skellefteå, and his current stats read a huge 24+ minutes of time on ice - the most he's ever clocked in the CHL!
His quick two-way play and offensive awareness - mainly highlighted by two important goals against the Lahti Pelicans on Game Day 3 - we think would go perfectly with Robertson's tough play.
Also, we're impressed with how much faith he has from one of the strongest teams in Europe right now - reigning SHL champions and last season's CHL Finalists Skellefteå - and if he has theirs, he certainly has ours.
FW - Michael Špaček
Genève-Servette's Michael Špaček proved to be an essential asset for the reigning CHL Champions throughout their challenging Regular Season. His seven goals across six games combined with a very solid five assists make him the deadliest sniper of them all and a player with a sure spot on our Team of the Regular Season.
Having scored a remarkable third of Genève’s total goals scored so far this season, it's no surprise the 27-year-old has a hattrick to his name as well as he's been terrorising goaltenders and defencemen across the continent.
FW - Libor Hudáček
Long-time Oceláři Třinec forward Libor Hudáček secures a place on Team of the Regular Season for a second season in a row! The 34-year-old Slovak sniper concluded the Regular Season with an outstanding 12 points (4G, 8A) and was instrumental in helping his Czech team secure a Playoff spot, doing what he has done many times before - leading.
His leadership by example began with a goal and an assist to help Třinec take the win on Game Day 1 and he wrapped up with a standout performance against Unia Oświęcim, netting two goals and adding two assists in a stunning ten-goal showdown.
FW - Marcus Sörensen
Marcus Sörensen had an outstanding Regular Season, finishing with two goals and an impressive eight assists in just five games, averaging a respectable two points per game – on par with both Špaček and Hudáček.
As a key playmaker for Fribourg-Gottéron, Sörensen consistently created scoring opportunities, earning him over 19 minutes of ice time per game, a significant increase from his 2022/23 average of less than 12 minutes.
Decisive plays, a team-first approach backed up by a league-high eight assists, while also not shying away from taking matters into his own hands when necessary. Sörensen is a player to die for.
