- Klagenfurt and Biel sit top of Group A ahead of Game Day 5
- KAC Klagenfurt ahead of EHC Biel-Bienne on goal difference
- Biel have allowed just four goals against so far
With just four games on Wednesday, KAC Klagenfurt of Austria host EHC Biel-Bienne in Group A, with both sides looking to stay at the top of the group and qualify for the playoffs after these next two games, with both sides occupying the qualification spots heading into Game Day 5, with goal difference being the only thing that puts Klagenfurt ahead of Biel with both one nine points each.
Klagenfurt occupy top spot in the group coming into Wednesday’s contest, having just one loss from their first three games in their meeting with Tappara Tampere on Game Day 3. The Austrian side who are making their third appearance in the tournament are still looking for their first appearance in the CHL playoffs. While Matthew Neal has been superb in attack for Klagenfurt with seven points in the CHL so far, and seven points in as many games in domestic action, it’s been the superb performance in net by Lars Haugen that has been the real difference maker for the team this season. In his appearances so far for the team, he’s saved 97.18% of the shots he’s faced, and leads the competition with two shutouts.
The visitors from Switzerland have also had similar defensive success so far in the CHL, with impressive goaltending of their own from both Jonas Hiller and Elien Paupe who boast impressive save percentages of 98.48% and 91.67% respectively. While Biel haven’t had the most offensive success in the tournament with just six goals to their name, it’s their defence that has stood out the most and something that they’ll once again rely on to come up big on Wednesday night. In their first ever CHL appearance, Biel occupy second spot in Group A but face tough competition to qualify for the next round from Tappara, so a win on Wednesday will be huge to keep their hopes alive.
