- Lukko in top ten in goals for and goals against
- Bolzano have played some of their best hockey on the road
- Italian side will need contributions from up and down the roster
With two goals in hand in aggregate scoring, Finnish side Lukko Rauma will welcome HC Bolzano for their Return Game in the Round of 16.
After falling 3-1 to Lukko in the First Game, Bolzano will be looking for an improved effort on both sides of the puck. Fortunately for the Italians, the road has been kind to them as they’ve managed to secure three of their four wins away from Eiswelle.
Another positive is that they also received some secondary scoring from Michael Halmo who now has two goals and two helpers for four points in seven games. For Bolzano to move on, they'll have to continue to call upon that depth while also receiving contributions from their top guys in Brett Findlay, Dustin Gazley, and Mathew Maione. With the Italians currently averaging three goals per game, their chances of advancing to the Quarter-Finals aren’t out of the realm of possibility and it all starts with a consistent, concerted effort.
Lukko showcased that consistent effort in their First Game victory. The Finns, who occupy seventh place in goals per game with 3.57, wasted no time in finding the net when Scott Pooley broke the ice just over five minutes in. Vili Saarijärvi added some insurance midway through the first as the Finnish side took a 2-0 lead into the second period. Offence, however, wasn’t their only strong suit on the night as Lukko netminder, Lassi Lehtinen, made all but one save on 24 shots on goal. Now Lukko, who are also seventh in goals for with 25 and fourth in goals against with only 12, have put themselves in a prime position to advance. But a matchup against an Italian squad that has performed admirably on the road could pose a challenge and Lukko will have to be ready for a hungrier team than they faced in Italy last week.
