- Both clubs still able to qualify, but only one will move on
- Rouen took last game and are ahead in the standings
- Rungsted need win in regulation to advance
Rungsted Seier Capital need a win in regulation against the Rouen Dragons to proceed to the Round of 16 as the two teams are set to face-off for their final game of the Group Stage.
In the previous affair between the two clubs, Rouen opened the scoring with Joris Bedin’s second of the competition. Rungsted leveled the game thanks to Henrik Hetta, but late in the second, the hosts would net their second and third goals to go 3-1 up after 40 minutes.
They would add to their lead with two more tucks in the third, while Rouen netminder Matija Pintarič ended the night with 23 saves on 24 shots culminating in a dominant performance that saw the French jump into second place in the Group G standings.
Currently, Rouen sit two points in front of their Danish opponents and can advance to the Playoffs with either a win in regulation or overtime. An encore of last week’s performance can cement the French side's second appearance in the Round of 16 in three campaigns.
For Rungsted, however, the path to the Playoffs is more precarious. An overtime win won’t do them any favours, so they’ll have to secure the victory after 60 minutes. Since they have the better head-to-head against HC Donbass Donetsk, this will be enough for the Danes to move into second position and, consequently, the Round of 16.
Following their 5-1 defeat at the hands of Rouen, Rungsted, already in a desperate position, will need to have their skating legs from the start.
Nikolaj Rosenthal, their leading scorer, has five points in five games, but all assists. He’ll have to find his scoring touch to give the Danish side a chance. Similarly, forward Marcus Olsson, who currently leads the club in scoring in their domestic league with nine points, will be looked upon to produce in this match-up.
In net, David Grubak won his only start and could be called upon to tend the crease in this do-or-die fixture, while Finnish goalie Ville Kolppanen needs a bounce back game after allowing five goals on Rouen’s 35 shots.
