- Straubing are already qualified for the Playoffs
- Last game of the season for Villach
- Straubing beat Villach 3-1 last week
The Straubing Tigers host Austrian side Villach SV in Germany for their final Group Stage game. The German newcomers enter the tie with a 4-1 win record and with their spot in the final 16 secured, but things couldn't be more different for Villach who've had a 1-4 record in the CHL this season and will definitely miss the Playoffs. With top spot of Group F still up for grabs for Straubing and a positive end to a otherwise bad season in Europe on the table for Villach, this could be an interesting end to Group F action!
Straubing have hit the ground running in their debut season in the Champions Hockey League. Aside from 12 points from 5 games, the Germans have showcased one of the best powerplay units in the league. Their powerplay % sits just above 26% which lands them in the Top 5 in the CHL so far. They've also let in only 11 goals and goalkeeper Hunter Miska has played in each and every one of their games - a feat only six other goalkeepers have managed this season. When compared to those six other netminders, the American has the second-best save percentage with 91.27%.
Villach have had a tough run on their return to the CHL for the first time since 2014/15. The Austrians have had trouble in all areas, but most visible has been their lack of scoring and defending. Excluding their Game Day 4 win over Comarch Cracovia, Villach have only scored four goals in four games whilst letting in a whopping 15!
They also boast a very poor 13% effectivity on the powerplay which puts them in the bottom eight on the CHL stats leaderboards. When looking at personal stats, none of their players has scored more than two goals, with most of the team sitting on one or zero goals scored. If the Austrians are to win this game, they'll have to really step up their productivity and tap in to the energy they showcased during their 6-2 win over Cracovia a few weeks back.
