- Zug easily handled Munich 5-1 in First Game
- Munich will look to lean on top scorers to have a chance
- Zug could qualify for Quarter-Finals at home
Swiss side EV Zug cruised past Red Bull Munich in their First Game by a 5-1 final, securing a 4-goal aggregate lead with a chance to advance to the Quarter-Finals as they travel home.
A three-assist night has Brian O’Neill at 15 points through seven contests. The American currently sits second in scoring league wide and has been a consistent producer for a Swiss club that is making a strong case for the European Trophy. Three players scored, with Peter Cehlárik and Sven Senteler netting two goals each, and the defence allowed 22 shots with Leonardo Genoni only allowing one goal.
As they get ready for their Return Game against a desperate Munich, Zug will need to match their intensity and pace early on. The Swiss did well on both sides of the puck through 60 minutes last week, and will need that same sustained effort heading into Wednesday.
Munich’s defensive troubles against Zug were the third time in as many games that the Germans allowed four or more goals against, and the fourth time they allowed as many this season. They currently sit in 16th in the category with 2.86 and also sport the 16th-ranked penalty kill. Solidifying the backend with a more structured approach would go far in helping their chances of making a comeback.
The Germans are also in need of some reinvention on offence, as well. They’ve scored four or more goals four times this season, and have three equally capable scorers in Ben Street (7G,2A), Andreas Eder (2G,6A), and Frederik Tiffels (2G,5A), but have been limited to just one goal in their previous two contests combined. As Munich look to climb out of their four-goal deficit, more production from their top players will be a focal point, with contributions up and down the lineup only helping their bid to advance to the Quarter-Finals.
