- Both teams won on GD1
- Innsbruck beat Genève 5-2 on their CHL debut
- Kevin Roy scored 2 goals for Innsbruck
Both EHC Biel-Bienne and HC Innsbruck won on Game Day 1 on season-opening day in the Champions Hockey League, but only one of them will make it 2/2 so far this season - who are you betting on?
You could bet on the home team - Biel-Bienne. The Swiss side beat Slovak challengers HC Košice on the road, outshooting them 33-15. But with all due respect, no one really expected Košice, the lowest-ranked team in 2023/24, to sweep the 2023 Swiss finalists.
Biel-Bienne didn't dominate this game. Yes, they were more active on the puck and were the ones calling the shots for most of the 60 minutes of game time but they scored two of their goals by capitalising on Košice's defensive blunders and added goal #3 into an empty net. Were they really in top form?
A team that WAS in top form was Innsbruck. Nobody expected much from Košice and so was the case for the Austrians who made their CHL debut against Swiss champions Genève-Servette.
They went two goals down within the first three minutes of the game but a three-goal second period saw them go into a one-goal lead as Genève suffered a total loss of focus defensively and in net.
Their forwards kept up the pressure, but a perfect Evan Buitenhuis in net for Innsbruck stopped all but two of Genève's 47 shots on goal, recording a 96+ Save %!
Ex-NHLer Kevin Roy scored twice as the Austrians sent Innsbruck into mayhem, picking up a surprise 5-2 win over such a strong opponent.
Innsbruck are on a high and will make their second CHL debut in this game - their very first CHL away game.
Biel-Bienne haven't shown us much, Innsbruck have shown us everything - let's see how this plays out.
