- Ilves top-ranked team of the season so far
- Vítkovice head into this game 2/3
- Vítkovice failed to score against Lahti in last game
Ilves Tampere will be looking to keep their winning streak running against a 2-for-3 Vítkovice Ridera side that will be looking to return to winning ways after failing to score against the Lahti Pelicans on Game Day 3. Both these teams enter Game Day 4 in a Playoffs position in the Regular Season Standings but they both know each and every point counts. This could be one close game!
Ilves have been one of the strongest teams in the Champions Hockey League so far this season. They've scored an average of five goals a game, let in just six goals (four of which were in their last outing against Oceláři Třinec but more on that later) and sit at the very top of Regular Season Standings.
Their powerplay unit has been converting at nearly 30% of its chances while their penalty kill has been killing man advantages on over 80% efficiency - respectable numbers.
Šimon Stránský (1G+5A), Eemeli Suomi (2G+3A) and Petr Kodýtek (1G+4A) lead the team in scoring, with four more teammates operating at over a point per game.
Ilves had been killing it heading into their first home game of the season on Game Day 3, picking up back-to-back wins against Dynamo Pardubice and HC Bolzano and scoring a combined 10 goals and letting in only two! But Czech side Oceláři Třinec proved a tougher nut to crack.
The 5-4 game could have easily gone Třinec's way if it hadn't been for super D-man Les Lancaster who turned the game upside down with two third-period strikes. Could Vítkovice be another tough one for the Finns?
It sure looks like they could! Vítkovice have been a formidable side this season, having toppled the likes of reigning DEL champions Red Bull Munich and beating Swiss side Rapperswil-Jona Lakers 4-1.
Their last challenge didn't go to plan as they failed to make it onto the scoresheet against the Lahti Pelicans, losing 4-0. What went wrong?
It wasn't as if Vítkovice didn't have chances - they did. But 14 penalty minutes gave Lahti too much space to create and combine and they punished the Czechs for that with two goals on the powerplay.
Dominik Lakatoš has been the standout player for Vítkovice with 3G+2A in three games while D-man Stuart Percy has also racked up two goals and combined with his two assists, he's on four points in three games.
Ilves can punish teams on the powerplay and with the CHL's new 'two minutes means two minutes' rules, that is one deadly weapon to hold. Limiting powerplays will be the main focus for Vítkovice as they pack a punch up front also.
