- Both clubs have already qualified for Playoffs
- Lukko lost their last match on home ice
- Genève enter with four consecutive wins
Lukko Rauma had a solid bounce back effort against Red Bull Munich, defeating the German side 4-1 on Game Day 5. After putting up back-to-back convincing wins, Genève-Servette narrowly squeezed out the victory against Dynamo Pardubice in a 3-2 OT decision. Both clubs have already qualified for the Round of 16 as Lukko is currently in third place with 12 points, while Genève sit in sixth with 11 points.
It was Theodor Lennström netting the game-tying goal after Pardubice took the lead five minutes into the third period and thanks to the outstanding play of Gauthier Descloux, the Swiss were able to force OT where Daniel Winnik buried the game-winner in a tilt that saw Pardubice push Genève to the brink. Now entering their contest against a more-than-capable Lukko squad, Genève will need that same security in net against a team that’s averaging 3.60 goals per game.
On the backend, the Swiss boast a few veteran defencemen, but it’s the play of Sami Vatanen that has been a boon for Genève. Through five tilts, the Finnish D-man has compiled one goal and six helpers and is tied for second among defencemen in points. Maintaining that level of production will only help his club’s bid for good results against their Finnish challengers.
Lukko's sole hiccup at home against Adler Mannheim seems but a distant memory as the club put four past Mathias Niederberger, who has been one of the top-ranked netminders all season. But things could be different against Genève’s third-ranked defence that’s only allowing 2.20 goals per game. If the Finns hope to claim their fifth victory of the season, their 19th-ranked powerplay will need some tweaking.
Fortunately, some confidence might have been restored in this area as they're coming off a game where they netted one on the man-advantage courtesy of Ponthus Westerholm who enters the contest with four goals and one assist on the season.
