- Both clubs experienced tough losses in extra time
- Třinec have scoring, need sounder defence
- The Germans took their first game to a 15-round shootout
Both clubs were involved in close contests that saw each on the losing side in the extra session as Oceláři Třinec fell to Rapperswil-Jona Lakers in OT with a 7-6 final, while Red Bull Munich came up short in a 15-round shootout, losing 4-3 to Vítkovice Ridera. The loss means both teams will bring their best as they attempt to secure their first win of the season.
Looking ahead, the numbers reveal where Třinec can improve. They struggled to produce more high-danger opportunities, generating four to Rapperswil's nine; the Czechs also had a lower powerplay efficiency – 25% to 50% – and weren’t as effective on the penalty kill, producing at 50% compared to the Swiss' 75%. However, Třinec demonstrated their firepower and their prowess for finding the net.
Five skaters scored for the home side, including Libor Hudáček who had a pair of tallies. Improving their numbers on special teams and finding ways to keep the puck out of their net are the keys to success for a squad that has shown it can score.
Coming into their contest against just their second Czech opponent in eight CHL seasons, Munich had a 71% Expected Win and created 3.30 Expected Goals to Vítkovice’s 1.71. While the Germans did manage to reach their goals target, they failed to stave off an underrated Czech side that proved it could put the puck in the net with the likes of Dominik Lakatoš and eventual game-hero Stuart Percy.
With another Czech challenger on the horizon, Munich will look to gain some revenge and that starts with better powerplay efficiency – though they secured a pair of powerplay goals, they only converted on two out of seven opportunities – and smarter shots as they only managed an 8% shot efficiency.
