- Both clubs won on Game Day 1
- Färjestad scored four, Ingolstadt five on Friday
- Wojciech Stachowiak scored 2G+1A for Ingolstadt
In a match-up of two teams that both won on the opening day of the 2023/24 Champions Hockey League season, one of these teams will be dropping points when ERC Ingolstadt welcome Färjestad Karlstad to Germany for each club's second of six Regular Season games.
Ingolstadt glided past a resilient Rouen Dragons side, beating them 5-3 on the road with a spectacular Wojciech Stachowiak picking up 2G + 1A on the night. But scoreline aside, this wasn't as straightforward a game as it may seem.
The score between Rouen and visitors Ingolstadt was locked 2-2 heading into the final frame, but a monstrous three-goal third set Ingolstadt up for all three points.
The Germans were strong on the puck, created chances and controlled long passages of play. They outshot the reigning French champions 38-15 but struggled with discipline, picking up five penalties, three of which Rouen converted into goals - ouch.
Meanwhile, Färjestad were doing much of the same in their Game Day 1 battle with Norwegian champions the Stavanger Oilers. They went 0-1 down within the first ten minutes but clawed their way back into this neck-and-neck game to take a 4-2 win.
Färjestad converted on the powerplay, killed man advantages and relied on their second and third lines for goals - equally spreading them out among four different players. But they were missing confidence and spent too much time killing penalties to be able to control the puck for longer stretches of play.
And with their fourth goal of the game being an empty-netter, it was hardly a confident display of force.
To stand a chance against Ingolstadt, the Swedes will have to keep their time in the box down and focus on breaking down the Germans in their own zone.
Ingolstadt on the other hand could really trouble Färjestad with their strong hits and prolonged puck play.
