- Both clubs lost on GD1
- Unia Oświęcim picked up point on CHL debut
- Berlin travelling to Poland
Who would've thought that between reigning DEL champions Eisbären Berlin and Unia Oświęcim, it would be the Poles who have more points following Game Day 1. But let's not get too excited as the Champions Hockey League debutants did score in their first-ever CHL game - but just the one point from a OT loss.
However, looking at the game, one point really does tell one heck of a story, as the Poles were on it from the get-go. Home side Ilves Tampere may have drew first blood, but it was a short-lived lead, as by the end of the first period it was neck-and-neck. Oświęcim took the lead in the second, then again in the third with just over five minutes of game time left but a late equaliser and even faster OT-winner robbed them of a slam dunk.
Krystian Dziubiński was the star of the show with two goals on the night.
For Berlin, Växjö Lakers proved too strong an opponent. Special teams came through in a big way for the Swedes who cashed in on two of their six opportunities to secure the victory, proving that not only did the Germans gift their opponents too many chances at scoring whilst on the man-advantage, they were also poor on the PK. And guess who had a PP unit operating at 50% on Thursday? That's right, Oświęcim.
However, if Berlin keep their discipline in check, they'll have a lot to throw at the Poles. The DEL champions racked up 28 shots on goal on Game Day 1 - double what Oświęcim managed against Ilves - and were very strong on face-offs. If the Poles are to stand a chance against this European giant, it's going to have to be by forcing them into mistakes or uncomfortable situations.
