- Rouen's defeat highlighted by their defensive woes
- Třinec pushed to the limit in their OT victory
- Neither side has ever faced the other in their CHL tenures
Oceláři Třinec were pushed to the brink in their 2-1 OT win over Swiss side Lausanne HC. After securing the equaliser in the second period, it would only take 44 seconds for the Czechs' Daniel Kurovský to deposit the game winner. For the Rouen Dragons, however, their contest against KAC Klagenfurt saw the French chasing the lead from the start in their eventual 4-2 defeat.
Rouen's troubles started early when Klagenfurt's Matthew Fraser scored just three minutes in, and from there the hosts were unable to match strides with the Austrians. At one point, the visitors held a 3-0 lead, until the French were able to cut into it with a goal by Jared Dmytriw. Tomas Simonsen would be Rouen's other goal scorer, but a breakdown on defence all but guaranteed the French side's disappointing end.
Třinec also found themselves trailing when Lausanne's Théo Rochette scored with 32 seconds to go in the middle stanza, but that deficit was quickly squashed when Libor Hudáček found the tying goal just under two minutes into the third period. Despite their win, however, the Czechs were heavily outplayed for most of the match with the Swiss outshooting them 39-19 and enjoying more success in the faceoff dot, winning 34 to Třinec's 16.
Special teams was a different story with the visitors generating both a higher powerplay efficiency at 50% compared to Lausanne's 20%, as well as better results when down a man with a PK efficiency of 80% to that of 50% for the Swiss.
Looking ahead to their Game Day 2 derby against Třinec, Rouen would do well to prioritise their play without the puck. Despite both clubs being equal in most metrics, it's the French side's inability to force turnovers and keep up the forecheck that could lead to another loss. On the opposing bench, the Czech side will need to generate more chances after only securing one high-danger scoring opportunity against Lausanne.
