- Both teams met in 2021/22 - Klagenfurt beat Rouen twice
- Rouen won their 18th French title last season
- First time for Klagenfurt playing under new CHL format
France's Rouen Dragons are set to breathe fire once again in this season of the Champions Hockey League, marking their fifth appearance among Europe’s elite. Last season, they finished in 19th place after winning just two out of six games. That’s a result they’re determined to improve upon this year. Coincidentally, their first opponents this season, KAC Klagenfurt, will also be making their fifth CHL appearance, returning to the league after a two-year absence. With each team's season-opener set, this will be an exciting match-up to look forward to.
Rouen are expected to enter the competition with confidence, holding the Ligue Magnus crown, which secured their ticket to the CHL. Their ambitions are high as they aim to advance into the knockout rounds - something they've managed before when they made history in 2021/22 as the first-ever Challenger League team to reach the Quarter-Finals. To bolster their chances, they have signed on a rather long list of reinforcements. Precisely eight players from top European leagues, strengthening every position on the ice, including goaltender Oskari Setanen, defenceman Juho Tommila, and forward Robin Colomban.
Their first challenge will come from determined and successful Austrians KAC Klagenfurt, who qualified by winning the regular season of the ICE Hockey League. Klagenfurt will pose a great threat as they are aiming high, with their sights firmly set on reaching the Playoffs. To achieve this goal, they’ve brought in four new players to primarily boost their offence. Mathias From, Senna Peeters, and Nick Pastujov will lead the charge, while Thimo Nickl will help keep the rival forwards from finding the back of the net. With strong individual talent and a fast collective game, the Austrians have a good chance of continuing their successful run against Rouen, as Klagenfurt managed to beat the French side 4-0 and 2-1 in OT in 2021/22.
Keep an eye out for Sebastian Dahm, the long-time goaltender of the Danish national team in KAC's services, and Rouen’s captain, Loïc Lampérier, who will begin his 16th year with one of France's most decorated professional ice hockey organisations.
