- Fehérvár failed to score on GD1
- Sparta lost in a shootout to Tappara
- Both clubs hunting for points
Game Day 1 was a horror show for Hungarian side Fehérvár AV19 who suffered a big 7-0 defeat to Czech Extraliga side Dynamo Pardubice. Leaving Pardubice, the Hungarians now move on to the capital Prague where Sparta Prague's O2 Arena will open its doors to the ICE Hockey League team and its fans.
What went wrong for the visitors in Pardubice? Mainly discipline and special unit play. Home club Pardubice scored two powerplay goals within the first six minutes of the game and added a fifth in the third - penalty shot to make it 7-0 aside. But it wasn't all doom and gloom, Fehérvár did manage 26 shots on goal and had sections of play where it seemed inevitable they'd score, but a great performance from Tomáš Vomáčka in net and a star-studded Pardubice team just didn't give an inch.
Sparta's Game Day 1 outing saw them welcome European heavyweights Tappara Tampere to their arena in one of the most anticipated games of the round. After a goalless first period, Aleksi Mustonen made it 1-0 but Filip Chlapík levelled the score minutes later. The undecided game ended up going to OT and then to a subsequent shootout where the Finns got the upper hand. So what's the takeaway from this game?
The Czechs did well against such a tough opponent but lacked creative spark to surprise them. Josef Kořenář did well in net, recording a 96% save percentage and faring well in the shootout. They were also strong on face-offs, in shooting and even rolled over Tappara in expected goals (3.05 to 1.46).
Now all they need to do is get their first win of the season. Could Fehérvár be just the right opponent or will the Hungarians have a surprise comeback up their sleeve?
