- Växjö continued their success at home with first win
- Fixing disciplinary issues will be key for Sheffield
- Scoring ability for both clubs was on full display in Game Day 1 fixtures
The Växjö Lakers will play host to British opponents the Sheffield Steelers in this Game Day 2 derby. A hard-fought effort against Swiss challenger Fribourg-Gottéron ended in disappointment for Sheffield as they dropped their first contest by a 4-3 final. Meanwhile, Växjö maintained their excellence at home with a 3-1 victory over Eisbären Berlin.
An early goal by the visitors put Växjö on their heels as the Swedes were unable to find an answer after the first 20 minutes. But two quick powerplay tallies propelled the hosts to a one-goal lead three and a half minutes into the middle frame. Another quick marker from Dennis Rasmussen 41 seconds into the third period would cement the team's first victory and give them their fifth win in their last six home stands.
Special teams play aside, improving their even-strength efforts should be a priority for Växjö if they hope to secure their third consecutive home win against a Sheffield team that showed success at 5-on-5 hockey against Fribourg.
For the British side, things were going well in the beginning. They managed to secure a two-goal lead off the sticks of Daniel Leavens and Daniel Ciampini, but were unable to defend their advantage as Fribourg would go on to net three of their own before Sheffield's Mikko Juusola finally answered with a late tally in the first period. Furthermore, their inability to stay out of the box in the closing stanza didn't help matters, as the team were guilty of multiple penalties that ultimately cost them a chance at evening the score.
Keeping their emotions in check will be a good first step in helping to manufacture a win in their Game Day 2 derby. And while this team has already proven it can score with five aside on the ice, more attention to special teams could also bode well for the Brits.
