- Belfast return for their fourth CHL campaign
- KalPa crowned Finnish champions for the first time in 2025
- Olympic champion Teemu Hartikainen rejoins KalPa after 15 years away
The Belfast Giants return to the Champions Hockey League after a season out and will play their fourth season on Europe's biggest club ice hockey stage. Following their memorable treble-winning 2022/23 season and a strong domestic campaign last year, the Giants are eager to showcase their progress on the European stage.
Head Coach Adam Keefe, a club legend, has made it clear that his side are “not just here to take part” but determined to advance beyond the Regular Season. Backed by the passionate Teal Army at the SSE Arena, Belfast will look to make a strong start in front of their home fans.
Their opening opponent will be KalPa Kuopio, the reigning champions of Finland. After claiming their first-ever Liiga title in 2025, KalPa return to the CHL for the fifth time, and first time since 2017, aiming to turn domestic success into international recognition.
Led by Head Coach Sami Tervonen, the Finns are praised for their high-tempo skating game and structured style of play. The roster has been strengthened with the return of Olympic and CHL Champion Teemu Hartikainen, who rejoined his boyhood club after 15 years away.
Keep an eye on Belfast’s productive forward Scott Conway, who tallied over 57 points last season and has established himself as one of the Elite League’s top scorers. David Goodwin’s leadership and two-way play will also be key in setting the tone for the Giants.
For KalPa, veteran centre Jaakko Rissanen remains the heartbeat of the attack, while Hartikainen’s power and international experience also add a dangerous new dimension up front.
This opener promises an interesting clash between the champions of the United Kingdom and Finland, with Belfast aiming to spring a surprise against one of Europe’s strongest contenders.
