- Bern have been at the top of their game lately
- No surprise Frölunda continue to dominate
- First-ever meeting despite long CHL tenures
Frölunda Gothenburg had a blast on Game Day 5 as they took down Eisbären Berlin 4-1, who have now lost four straight. The Belfast Giants didn't fare much better as they were bulldozed by SC Bern in a 7-0 decision. The Swiss scored their first 37 seconds into the opening frame and never let up as they secured their third victory.
No matter if they're away from home ice or not, Frölunda are a club that need no reminder when it comes to Champions Hockey League success. This was again the storyline against a struggling German side in Berlin. Erik Thorell was at his best, potting two and adding an assist to his resume as he helped the Swedes bounce back following their previous loss to Sparta Prague. Four-time participant Lars Johansson was equally impressive between the pipes, stopping 28 of 29 shots.
With the wheels turning smoothly for Frölunda, it seems not much can stand in their way of marching towards another notch on the European Trophy. That said, it should be noted that Bern are anything but struggling.
The Swiss have their own success in the crease, manufacturing two shutouts from Adam Reideborn and scoring an average of 3.60 goals per game, which puts them in fourth place in the category. Dominance is an understatement to describe their game against Belfast, and you can expect that same fierce play as they understand the challenge that awaits them in Sweden. The last time they faced a Swedish opponent was during Game Day 2 when they lost to Luleå Hockey 4-2 in a close game.
Since then, the club has burgeoned into a more competent and confident team, scoring 14 tallies while only allowing six against. Bern have shown what it looks like when they take their play to next level, and the Swiss will need that same momentum going forward as they face an entirely different beast in Frölunda.
