- Both need to find ways to solve their scoring woes
- Last time these two clubs met, they split wins in the 2017/18 campaign
- The Czechs are in desperate need of points
Waltteri Merelä's shorthanded tally helped SC Bern establish a one-goal lead, but Luleå Hockey were able to battle back and ultimately take down the Swiss side 4-2, handing Bern their first loss of the season. On the opposing bench, Mountfield HK have been experiencing some serious setbacks to begin their 2025/26 Champions Hockey League campaign as they fell in their second contest to Brynäs IF which managed to stockpile five goals against the Czechs while surrendering none in return.
Bern's biggest cause for concern at this point is their goal scoring, or lack thereof. Through two tilts, the Swiss have secured a combined four tallies and have been virtually nonexistent on the man-advantage. While their shutout against Grenoble was notable, the fact that they only managed two goals on 29 shot attempts is something to take into account. Fast forward to their game against Luleå, and you see similar results - several a few high quality chances with little effect.
If they are to improve in the offensive side of things, they have no better chance than their upcoming contest against a Mountfield team that's allowing the third-most goals against per game with an average of 4.50.
It's easy enough to blame defence as the catalyst for the Czechs' collapse against Brynäs, but the reality is that while their play without the puck wasn't ideal, it was also the fault in their stars who plainly didn't show up. The Czechs fired 27 shots and didn't convert on one. Aleš Jergl and Alex Tamáši, both of whom were top scorers for Mountfield in their domestic league last year, haven't made much of a presence so far. Both have only secured one tally so far and sport a -3 in the plus/minus category.
If the Czechs hope to secure their first win of the season against a more-than-capable club in Bern, they'll need to find ways to solve their scoring woes because another loss will certainly jeopardise their chances of advancement.
