- Cologne unbeaten and in race for Regular Season Winners crown
- Top 3 scorers of the CHL are all Cologne players
- Both teams already qualified for Playoffs
The Swiss were shutout in their previous derby as Genève-Servette fell to the Växjö Lakers 4-0, while Kölner Haiec ontinued their torrid pace through the 2026/27 Champions Hockey League campaign by blanking Herning Blue Fox 3-0 to take their fifth win of the season and keep them unbeaten so far this season.
For Cologne, it's been about consistency. Through five games, the Germans have been able to secure three or more goals in each, while allowing more than two in only one contest - a 4-5 OT win over Tappara Tampere.
Their perfect record is also indicative of the team's ability to maintain a high standard of play that few other teams in this season's CHL could mirror. This has been helped drastically by the talent they've deployed - namely CHL-leading scorers Marcel Noebels (7G, 5A), Patrick Russell (7G, 4A) and Gregor MacLeod (1G, 8A). Noebels leads the league in goals scored, and MacLeod stands atop the assist board. Foregone conclusions aside, with such talent in hand, the odds of Cologne making it six-in-a-row are high.
But it wouldn't be fair to count out a Genève club that, though they've had their share of disappointment this season, have also shown flashes of brilliance. Their leading scorer in former NHLer Jimmy Vesey (2G, 4A) while not putting up the same numbers as the boys from Cologne, has been dependable for the Swiss. Their defence has also put on a respectable display as they've only allowed an average of 2.20 GAG, good enough for seventh-place league wide.
What the Swiss want and what the Swiss need is more from their top talent. Scoring has been at a premium for Genève, and going up against one of the best teams in European hockey at the moment demands that they focus their efforts on engineering an offensive strategy that can pierce Cologne's third-ranked defence.
