- Both clubs enter having lost their previous fixture
- Nitra need to find a way to kickstart their offence
- Kouvola will make CHL debut
KooKoo Kouvola enter the contest after suffering their first loss of the season to Frölunda Gothenburg in a 2-1 OT decision. On the opposing bench, HK Nitra also come into the contest having lost their last match-up 3-1 to the Växjö Lakers. While Kouvola are looking to get themselves back into the win column, Nitra are still searching for their first win of the 2026/27 Champions Hockey League season.
The Slovakians kept themselves in the game against Växjö, matching their pace and taking the advantage midway through the second period, but a third-period crumble would cost them the lead and the game as the Swedes wound up scoring three unanswered tallies to take it. Moving forward, Nitra need to find a way to ignite their offence. So far through two games, they've only managed to secure two total tallies and are sitting among the bottom of the league with a 1.00 GG average. Getting some production from their top line is their top priority.
Kouvola did an excellent job frustrating the Swedes chances and keeping an otherwise high-scoring team to a one-goal lead for most of the match. Then in the second, Miska Siikonen secured the equaliser for his club that would eventually force OT. However, some undisciplined play led to a penalty shot for Frölunda's Samuel Fagemo, who capitalised to claim the victory for his side. As they prepare to face Nitra, Kouvola need to take the positives out of their match against Frölunda - solid defence and excellent netminding. They've already shown they can score, so as long as they maintain their consistency on the backend, a win is more than achievable.
