- Strong netminding for SaiPa will be key
- Staying sharp early can only help Pilsen
- First meeting between these two clubs
SaiPa Lappeenranta handily defeated Graz99ers 3-1 to register their third win of the season, and HC Pilsen kept their win streak going by taking down Skellefteå AIK 4-2 on Game Day 5 of the 2026/27 Champions Hockey League season.
For the Czechs, their CHL return has been going better than planned. Their impressive scoring pace combined with a dominant defence have, of course, rewarded the club with optimal results. In their most recent game against a strong Swedish side, Pilsen profited by overcoming a two-goal deficit with four unasnwered goals.
This ability to change the tides of a contest has been something Pilsen has done admirably if not often due to their own ability control the game from start to finish. As they get ready to take on a capable squad in SaiPa, however, the Czechs would do well not to rest on their laurels as they look to secure a perfect record through the Regular Season. Translated into practical terms - having their legs going early is essential. They are in the best possible position to take the Regular Season Winners crown but have some strong teams breathing down their knecks so need maximum points to make this dream a reality!
SaiPa, admittedly, have a tough test in front of them. But their odds of succeeding aren't catastrophic. The Finns house respectable numbers in both offence (3.20 GG) and defence (2.80 GAG) and their forward corps., led by Mikko Perttu (2G, 5A), has been serviceable. But in order to beat a high-octane team like Pilsen, SaiPa will need a stellar performance between the pipes. Pilsen will get their chances and their top-ranked offence - 4.80 GG - is evidence that they will capitalise if given the opportunity. So for the Finns to have any chance of downing this giant, consistency in the blue paint is essential. Fortunately, Gustavs Dāvis Grigals has been a beacon in net for SaiPa, showcasing a 90.91 SVS% and a respectable 1.98 GAA.
