- Lugano must win to maintain hope of advancing
- JYP can secure advancement with a regulation victory
- With Pilsen already clinching, only 1 place in Group H is still available
Heading into Gameday 5, the reigning European champions haven’t quite nailed down a spot in this year’s Round of 16, but they’re close. They can secure their position in the next round with a regulation victory in southern Switzerland. As for Lugano, they must get a win of some kind to ensure they have something to play for on Gameday 6.
Domestically, both of these teams are off to average starts. Lugano have three wins in seven Swiss National League games, whereas JYP have won five of 10 in the Finnish Liiga.
Offensively, Lugano is led domestically by Maxim Lapierre and Romain Loeffel with five points each, and in the Champions Hockey League by Linus Klassen and Jani Lajunen. JYP is led in domestically by the venerable Jarkko Immonen and in the CHL by David Tomášek. Both Lajunen and Immonen are well familiar with the leagues of their opponents, with Lajunen coming from Tappara and Immonen from Zug.
