The Stavanger Oilers and KalPa Kuopio both know where they’re going to finish in Group B, heading into what will be the last Champions Hockey League game for both teams this season. KalPa, who started with a win and followed it up with three losses before winning again, will try to go out on a high. The Oilers, who lost four games each by one goal before being shellacked in Kuopio last week, will try to earn at least one win this season in front of their home fans.
Both of these black and gold teams earned their places in the CHL with good finishes last year, but this year has been somewhat of a disappointment for both – in the CHL and domestically. Stavanger, the six-time reigning champions of Norway, have won just three of their first nine Ligaen games this season and sit sixth in the league. For KalPa, it’s been even worse, as they have won only three of 12 and sit 14th.
“It’s gonna be fun to go to a new place and see how the hockey is in Norway – the fans and everything there – so it’s gonna be a fun trip,” said KalPa forward Tommi Jokinen. “Obviously, we’re not satisfied that we didn’t qualify for the next round because that’s what we really wanted, but we have a lot of young guys and it’s good for them to get some international experience and see different hockey cultures.”
