- HC Pilsen looking to maintain unbeaten run
- HC Lugano recording first win on Friday night
- Pilsen recording narrow 3 – 2 win in opening game over Lugano
HC Pilsen will be putting their unbeaten record on the line on Sunday night when they face HC Lugano in the Cornèr Arena in Group H action of the Champions Hockey League.
Pilsen are one of three teams left in the competition with perfect winning records along with Kärpät Oulu and Ev Zug, while Lugano finally grabbed their first win of the season, leaving Group H with a three way tie for the second qualifying spot, with JYP Jyvaskyla and HC05 Banska Bystrica.
Lugano will hope they are able to put on other strong performance in front of their home crowd following Thursdays 4 – 1 win over Banska Bystrica, with Jani Lajunen getting on the scoresheet for his second of the tournament, while Linus Klasen had a three point night which he’ll hope to replicate again on Sunday.
Pilsen have had no shortage of help up front, with Vojtech Nemec the standout of the bunch, with a team leading three goals in as many games, including two goals in the first meeting between the two sides.
It’ll be interesting to see the goalie battle between the two sides this weekend, Elivs Merzlikins was impressive despite the loss in game one for Lugano, and the young Latvian netminder has been one of the standout players for Lugano this tournament, featuring in all three games for the side. Pilsen on the other hand have given ice time to two goaltenders in Dominik Frodl and Dimitri Milchakov, who have both been equally impressive, setting this game up to be a great defensive battle.
With Group H so tight, Lugano will need a big performance to end Pilsen’s unbeaten run to try and keep their qualification hopes alive.
