SC Bern earned their place in the Quarter-Finals the hard way. After losing the opening leg on home ice, they went into Munich and won 5-2 – thanks to three third-period goals – to take the series 7-5 on aggregate.
Already playing with a one-goal lead, Munich went two goals up at 9:09 when Brooks Macek’s shot beat Leonardo Genoni over the glove. However, Bern answered just 38 seconds later when Tristan Scherway stole the puck along the boards and then drilled a slapper past David Leggio.
In the second minute of the second period, Munich restored their two-goal advantage on Derek Joslin’s shot past a screened Genoni. It looked like Bern answered quickly again when Simon Moser deflected a high shot in front past Leggio on a four-minute power play, but video replay determined that he directed it in with his hand. However, three minutes later on the same power play, Moser scored a legitimate goal, sliding in a rebound.
The story of the first game was Bern’s inability to capitalize on chances, but finally things came together for them and in the third period they scored three times. Luca Hischier levelled the aggregate score with a high wrister in the 46th minute, Simon Bodenmann gave them the lead four minutes later by driving hard to the net to put in a rebound, and Andrew Ebbett added some insurance with 3:18 to play when he intercepted a pass at his own blueline, raced in on goal and slid a backhander through Leggio’s pads.
