In a game with the fortunes of three teams riding on it, SC Bern came up with a 5-2 win over Mountfield HK before 13,689 jubilant fans at PostFinance Arena to secure their place in the next round. Tristan Scherway led the way with two goals and one assist. In addition to Mountfield, the result also eliminated TPS Turku from advancing.
Mountfield needed to win, either in regulation time or overtime, and after several chances to score in the first period, finally opened the scoring with 1:34 left in the frame when Lukáš Vopelka took a cross-ice pass from Rudolf Červený and fired it home before Leonardo Genoni could slide across.
The second period, however, belonged to Bern, as they scored four unanswered goals to take a stranglehold on the game. They got going right away on the power play when Thomas Rüfenacht fired a wrister from the slot just inside the post. Ramón Untersander’s long shot past a screened Jakub Sedláček to give Bern the lead, and then another long shot through a crowd by Mika Pyörälä stood up as the eventual game-winning goal. Another power-play marker, this a one-timer by Scherway with just 15 seconds left in the middle frame, virtually stamped Bern’s place in the Round of 16.
The teams traded goals in the third period - Scherway’s second power play goal and the team’s third and Jakub Muška - to round out the scoring.
