The Vienna Capitals managed to stay alive in this year’s CHL with a 5-4 shootout victory over Neman Grodno. Both games between these two teams went to extra time, with each winning at home. Taylor Vause had 2 goals and 1 assist for Vienna, and Riley Holzapfel was credited with the shootout winner.
Things started good for Vienna, with Nikolaus Hartl and Andreas Nödl putting them up 2-0 before the game was 11 minutes old, but Neman roared back to tie it in the second - Sergei Malyavko at even strength and Filipp Metlyuk on the power play at 27:01. However, just 57 seconds later the Capitals were back in front, as Vause scoring his first after taking a breakaway pass from Nödl. It was tied again before the period was out, however, with Artyom Levsha’s wrister beating Jean-Philippe Lamoureux blocker side.
The teams traded goals again in the third period - Vause pouncing on a turnover in the Neman zone, and then Pavel Boyarchuk from right in front with the equalizer with just 2:14 left in regulation time. After a scoreless overtime, Vienna outscored Neman 2-1 in the shootout, with Riley Holzapfel getting credit for the winning goal.
