Dramatic scenes took place in Zurich's Hallenstadion as ZSC Lions and Bílí Tygři Liberec went all the way to a shootout to decide who’ll play the Växjö Lakers in the Semi-Finals.
After just one goal in 60 minutes last week in Liberec, the Lions and White Tigers played out a similar match tonight in Switzerland. No goals through two periods set up a thrilling climax, with Liberec increasing the tension. Just 1:39 had been played in the third period when Lukáš Krenželok fired home after a perfect pass from Petr Kolmann to tie the score on aggregate.
Liberec killed off several penalties during the period as ZSC couldn’t convert, but were then handed a golden chance when the Lions were called for having too many men on the ice with 1:37 to play. However, the Lions put their bodies on the line to keep the visitors out and force the game into overtime.
Again, the visitors had the lone power-play opportunity during overtime. Patrick Geering was called on a double minor for high-sticking, but again the ZSC side was able to kill off the penalty. A few half-chances for each team, notable Roman Wick for the hosts, were denied and the game headed to the shootout.
Liberec opted to shoot first. After a goalless opening round, Krenželok put the White Tigers ahead after two. Again no goals followed in Round 3, but when Petr Kolmann made it 2-0 in Round 4, that meant Kevin Kelin had to score. He couldn’t, and Liberec celebrated a 2-1 aggregate victory in front of their travelling fans!
