With both teams playing their final game of this year’s Champions Hockey League, KalPa Kuopio beat the Stavanger Oilers for the second straight week to close out Group B. This encounter, in Norway, saw the hometown Oilers leading 4-3 entering the third period before KalPa scored three straight goals to win 6-4.
The first period was played at a torrid pace, with each team scoring three goals. Stavanger went to a very early power play and Erik Borresen opened the scoring after just 45 seconds elapsed. The teams traded goals back and forth before Alexander Ruuttu knotted the game at 3 in the last minute of the period, finishing off a 2-on-1.
Stavanger’s Josh Soares scored the lone goal of the second period to give his team the lead heading into the final period, raising hopes that they would finally earn a win. However, Juuso Riikola’s slapper on the power play tied and Joni Ikonen’s rebound goal with less than eight minutes to play stood up as the winner. As frustrations boiled over in the late going, the teams were skating 4-on-4 when Ruuttu’s second of the game put it away.
It was a tough way to end a frustrating tournament for the Oilers, who leave without a win, despite having third-period leads in three of their games.
