Martin Zaťovič scored on a breakaway in overtime to give Kometa Brno a 4-3 overtime victory against the Stavanger Oilers. The win means that Kometa have now won all four games - two in overtime - to put them on the brink of advancing to the Round of 16. For Stavanger, it’s their first point after three one-goal losses in regulation time, although after leading by two goals in the third period, they had hoped for more.
The Oilers started quickly in the game, scoring twice in the first 11:37 to quiet the normally noisy Brno fans. First it was Josh Soares on a rebound at 1:03, and then Harrison Reed on the power play, walking in from the left-wing boards and firing a wrister past Marek Čiliak.
It was on the power play that Kometa got back into the game. After getting some chances but failing to score on a four-minute power play, they got on the board in the last minute of the opening period on a slapper by Tomáš Svoboda from the slot.
Henrik Medus restored Stavanger’s two-goal lead in the second period, taking advantage of a turnover inside the blueline, but Kometa pulled even with two goals within a five-minute span in the third period. First it was Jan Hruška on the power play on a nice feed from Lukáš Nahodil, and then Martin Dočekal finishing the play after a brilliant end-to-end rush by Tomáš Vincour with 13:21 left in regulation time.
The overtime goal was created by a heads-up play by goalie Čiliak, who after catching a Stavanger shot, spotted Zaťovič and sent him a perfect breakaway pass. Zaťovič made no mistake, firing a shot over Henrik Holm’s glove for Kometa’s second overtime win in as many games.
