Ryan Lasch, the MVP of the 2014/15 CHL season, scored the winner in the first minute of overtime to finish a game that was billed as a game between two teams that can play great hockey and delivered.
Frölunda never led through 60 minutes of regulation time, as the visiting ZSC Lions went up 2-0, 3-2 and 4-3, but the Indians tied it three times, including twice in the last four minutes. Matt Donovan’s power-play goal with 3:53 to go looked like it might send the game to overtime, but then just over a minute later, Reto Schappi took advantage of a turnover when Donavan fell - or was tripped - and scored an unassisted goal to put the Lions back in front. However, with goaltender Johan Gustafsson out for a sixth attacker, captain Henrik Lundqvist tied the game with 14 seconds to play.
Lasch’s 5-4 goal was his 15th in CHL competition. He also had two assists in the game. Max Friberg also had three assists for the victors, while Fabrice Herzog had a goal and an assist for Zurich.
“I don’t think anybody thought we would steal a point from the defending champions, so it’s a big point, but we’re still a few weeks away from playing at the level that it’s going to take to put away a team like that,” confessed Zurich coach Hans Wallson afterward.
