Red Bull Salzburg’s explosive start was enough to see them record a surprise win over Sweden’s Växjö Lakers in Mozart’s hometown.
Just 2:04 had been played when Michael Schiechl put the hosts ahead. Just over four minutes later the Red Bull fans went wild as Alexander Pallestrang doubled the lead with only 6:52 elapsed.
It took the Lakers until deep into the middle period to get themselves on the board, with Linus Fröberg at 36:49 halving the deficit. Despite being outshot 43-13, however, the Red Bulls allowed no further goals and will head to Sweden next week a goal ahead on aggregate.
"For sure it’s easier to play when you scored and you have a lead, maybe one or two goals. But I think a two goals lead is the worst lead in hockey because you can’t let up."Luke Gracnar (goaltender, Red Bull Salzbug)
"I think Salzburg did pretty well in their defence, they played tight, so it was tough for us to get really close to the net and find the rebounds. Somehow we have to find a way to score more goals."Robert Rosén (forward, Växjö Lakers)
