It was a huge win for Red Bull Salzburg, and not just in terms of the fact that nine goals were scored in Wolfsburg. Salzburg's regulation win means they now face the Grizzlys in a showdown next week in the Mozart City to decide the final qualifier from Group A.
Wolfsburg must have thought they were on the way to the next round when goals from Gerrit Fauser and Brent Aubin had them 2-0 up with only 2:33 played. The Red Bulls rallied, though, and were ahead before the period was over. Dominique Heinrich (4:54), Tommy Raffl (8:44), and Peter Mueller (19:30) scored three unanswered goals to put Salzburg ahead 3-2 after 20 minutes.
Aubin scored again to tie the game at three each with 27:56 played, but 12 seconds later, Alex Aleardi had the Red Bulls back ahead. Muller added another on the power play to make it 5-3 with 32:24 gone and Sebastian Furchner pulled one back for Wolfsburg with 42 seconds to play in the middle period.
Despite out-shooting the visitors 8-5 in the final period, Wolfsburg couldn't find a way past Luka Gracnar, and the Red Bulls stay alive in the CHL thanks to an important road win.
