After being on the wrong end of a thrashing last week by Tappara on their own ice, Red Bull Salzburg put up a courageous display in Tampere on Game Day 3 of the CHL.
The Red Bulls started on the front foot and were ahead with 4:19 played as the two-goal hero from last weekend, Alexander Rauchenwald, was left unmarked in the slot to fire home early. Tappara, who also trailed Salzburg early when the teams met last week, took some time to respond. The goal eventually came with just under two minutes to play in the opening period, with Otso Rantakari coming in on the blind side to wrist home. A great release from Bobby Raymond from inside the faceoff circle, though, had the Red Bulls back ahead with only three seconds left in the period.
Niko Ojamäki was the benefit of good fortune to get Tappara level, going through on the netminder his shot deflected off defenseman Alexander Pannenstrang's stick and past Luka Gracnar to tie the game with just over 25 minutes gone.
The score stayed locked at two each until late in the third. With 47:42 on the clock, Veli-Matti Vittasmaki's wrist shot from the point went through traffic and past Gracnar to put the home side ahead for the first time in the game. Kristian Kuusela made it 4-2 to give Tappara the comfort marker, and despite Ojamäki missing a late penalty shot, Tappara maintained their perfect start to the group stage with their third straight win.
"Three points and a win are the most important things. Of the goals we allowed, I should have done a better job but the guys played very well and scored the goals that we needed."Dominik Hrachovina, goaltender, Tappara Tampere
