Tappara Tampere got two goals in the first 11 of the game, and then did a furious job of defending to make sure HC05 Banská Bystrica were unable to generate any sort of attack. They added a third goal late in the game and won 3-0. Christian Heljanko made 24 saves for the shutout, and in his return to Tampere in the Banská Bystrica goal, Teemu Lassila stopped 23 of 26 shots at the other end.
Sebastian Repo, in his first game back with Tappara after returning from the Florida Panthers' training camp, opened the scoring at 8:45 off an attacking-zone faceoff, firing a wrister from the top of the circle. Then they made it 2-0 less than two minutes later, as Matias Alanen swept in a loose puck in front of the net after sustained Tappara pressure.
With all the offence they needed, the two-time defending Finnish champs let their feet off the accelerator and concentrated on denying Banská Bystrica any scoring chances, which they did a very good job of. They did get a few offensive chances but Lassila was solid against his former teammates. Finally, Jan-Mikael Järvinen put the game away with less than six minutes to play when he took a cross-crease pass and one-timed it home before Lassila could slide across.
With the result, Tappara secure 1st place in the group and Banská Bystrica are eliminated.
“It was a fun trip for me coming back to Finland, although it’s pretty short. I wanted to win this game but it was a good lesson for the younger guys on our team, playing against a strong team like Tappara. It was a step forward and we’ll be better at home.”Teemu Lassila, goaltender, HC05 Banská Bystrica
