- SC Bern have already qualified for the next round
- Red Bull Salzburg can overtake Bern with a regulation win
- Salzburg need just a point to secure their spot in the Round of 16
With SC Bern already confirmed for the next round of the competition, Red Bull Salzburg will be chasing that second qualification spot in Group G of the Champions Hockey League to see themselves through to the knockout stages.
Bern have a near perfect record in Group G, with three regulation wins and dropping just one point with an overtime win over the Cardiff Devils. Salzburg sit just two points behind Bern so with two games against the Swiss side coming up, they’ll be looking to sneak their way past them to finish top of the group if they can win these next two fixtures.
Through the first four games Bern have edged out their opponents with all of their games so far being decided by just one goal, scoring 12 goals along the way, with Simon Moser, Jan Mursak and Thomas Rüfenacht all scoring twice each, with Moser and Mursak also grabbing two assists each to lead the team with four points.
Swiss international netminder Leonardo Genoni leads all goalies who’ve played all four group stage games so far with a goals against average of 1.99, allowing eight goalies from the 95 shots he’s faced, and Bern will rely heavily on the 31-year-old.
Salzburg may have hoped for a favourable result on Tuesday but with the Växjö Lakers securing all three points against the Cardiff Devils it meant they weren't able to automatically qualify for the next round before the puck even drops on Wednesday night.
Brant Harris and John Hughes lead the side through the first four games with four points each, while the sides two new netminders this year Lukas Herzog and Steve Michalek have impressed as they split the starts both in the CHL and back in domestic action.
They’ve got momentum coming into this meeting on the back of three domestic wins, and they’ll look to keep that going with a shot at taking pole position in the group waiting them with the three points on Wednesday night.
