- Neither side can qualify from Group G for the next round
- Cardiff's last chance to get a win in this years Champions Hockey League
- Växjö looking to avoid defeat in Cardiff after a 5 - 1 loss last year
Despite both teams not having a chance at advancing through to the next round of the Champions Hockey League, both teams will be looking for some sort of redemption when the Cardiff Devils host the Växjö Lakers on Tuesday.
It's advantage to Växjö in the all-time CHL meetings between the two teams after the Lakers defeated the Devils 3 - 1 on game day five, but the two sides met twice and split the wins last year.
Cardiff will be looking to get their first win in their last CHL game for this year, repeating last years' success of a 5 - 1 win at home against the SHL champions, while the Lakers will be looking to avoid another repeat of a road defeat on their second visit to the Capital of Wales.
New signing Mike Hedden has come up huge for the Devils so far in the CHL, leading the team in points so far through the CHL with five, scoring the lone Devils goal last Tuesday, while also enjoying a great start to the domestic campaign with 7 points in 7 league games.
Despite lots of European experience under his belt, this is Hedden's first CHL campaign, and he's the man head coach Andrew Lord will call upon to continue his impressive debut season in Cardiff, and will look to light the lamp in front of a packed home crowd to add to his four goals which puts him in some impressive company in a list of players tied for the second most goals so far.
Netminder Ben Bowns has continued his impressive play for the Devils, after impressing at the World Championships last April to help Great Britain to the top division for last year, he's continuing his strong performances, and stopped 32 of 35 shots that got through to him last week, while last year when the Devils hosted Växjö, he stopped an incredible 45 of 46 shots on the way to a shock 5 - 1 victory.
"I'd give anything for us to get a win to finish off our CHL campaign. The boys have played really well so far, but we're facing one of the best teams in Europe."Andrew Lord (Head Coach, Cardiff Devils)
Just months after appearing in the CHL final where they fell to JYP Jyvaskyla of Finland in a 2 - 0 score line, the back-to-back SHL champions won't be advancing any further after Tuesday night’s game, destined to finish in third place regardless of the result.
Early losses to current Group leaders SC Bern and then a loss on the road to Red Bull Salzburg didn't help the Lakers, so now they'll be looking to just try and end the campaign on a bang and pick up their first road win in the process.
Defenceman Joel Persson is having a great tournament so far, after an 11 point campaign last year, the young offensive defenseman has 6 points through five games, and will be one of the key playmakers on Tuesday night as he looks to add his five assists, while Linus Fröberg and Austin Ortega lead the team in gaols with three a piece, but it was Pontus Netterberg, Jonas Røndbjerg and Brendan Shinnimin who got on the scoresheet in the last clash between the two sides.
Växjö have split ice time for both netminders Viktor Andrén and Viktor Fasth, both have performed respectfully during their game time on the ice, so both will give the Lakers a chance of leaving Ice Arena Wales with a final win before they bow out of the competition.
