- Mountfield scored two goals in final five minutes
- Christian Djoos scored equaliser two minutes before final buzzer
- Mountfield more active on the attack
It's all to play for in next week's Champions Hockey League Quarter-Finals Return Game between Mountfield HK and EV Zug. The Czech team looked poised for a hard-fought win after a two-goal comeback in the final five minutes, but a late goal from the visitors finalised the score at 2-2.
Both teams tested each other out at the start of the first period but Zug would be the first to score after Lino Martschini was passed the puck from a face-off in front of the Czech team's net. He rifled a shot through some traffic to beat goaltender Henri Kiviaho to make it 1-0 for the visitors. Mountfield and Zug exchanged blows for the remainder of the period with neither side gaining an advantage on the scoreboard.
The second period saw Mountfield up the pace and take over the initiative. The 2020 CHL Finalists recorded more shots on goal than the visitors and got into better chances properly testing Leonardo Genoni in net. Zug's Justin Abdelkader was called for holding at 33:49 which gave the home team an opportunity to test their powerplay unit but unsuccessfully.
With another 20 minutes of game time up, Mountfield had racked up over two times as many shots, but not one was able to get past Genoni. Their biggest chance came in the dying minutes of the second period when the Swiss goaltender had to block a goal-bound shot with his shoulder.
The Czechs picked up where they left off in the third period, continuing their push for a goal, but they just couldn't break Zug's defence and Genoni's perfect goaltending. But, with just five minutes of game time left, their long-sought reward finally came when Lukáš Cingel got onto the end of an offer from teammate Jakub Lev to make it 1-1.
Just two minutes later, Mountfield would go 2-1 up after a cross-ice pass found Oliver Okuliar who passed to Marek Zachar in front of the Zug net. The Czech forward had no problem tapping it past a wide-open Genoni as the fans in the ČPP Arena erupted in joy.
Their euphoria would, however, be short-lived, as the visitors would say their final farewell just a few minutes later when Christian Djoos found himself unmarked and in shooting range of the home team's net. He waited with the shot and aimed it perfectly to end the game 2-2.
