- Luleå scored twice in the second period
- Max Friberg secured the equaliser late in the game
- Sides remain tied 2-2 heading into the Return Game
Luleå Hockey found twine twice in the second period and Frölunda Gothenburg scored once in the first and late in the third to even things at 2-2 heading into next week's Champions Hockey League Semi-Finals Return Game at Coop Norrbotten Arena.
The sides entered Tuesday's fixture having just faced each other three days prior with Frölunda coming away with a 5-2 victory, and both teams had their legs going early.
Action paused near the seven-minute mark of the opening period when Frölunda made a temporary goalie change. Frederik Dichow entered the game due to Lars Johansson's broken skate blade.
Moments later, at the other end of the ice, the puck found the back of the net when Andreas Borgman roofed it over Matteus Ward's left shoulder with a beautiful backhand to give the hosts a 1-0 advantage. Borgman sped through the neutral zone, skated through the right circle and lifted the puck from an impossible angle near the goal line to secure his second of the season.
Six minutes into the second, Brendan Shinnimin made it a 1-1 contest when Luleå cashed in on their third man-advantage of the night. An initial shot from Juhani Tyrväinen pinballed around in the crease before finding Shinnimin's stick who fired it into the back of the net. The goal was briefly reviewed for goaltender interference but stood.
With less than five minutes to play in the middle stanza, the visitors extended their lead off of Joonas Rask's first of the season. The winger received a cross-ice pass from Olli Nikupeteri before sniping it far side from the top of the right circle, beating Johansson's blocker and giving Luleå their first lead of the night.
A late surge by Frölunda almost made it a 2-2 game with two and half to go, but upon review it was determined the puck never fully crossed the goal line.
With both sides skating four aside in the closing minutes of the third it was the home side lighting the lamp for their second of the night. Max Friberg controlled the puck along the boards before skating into the slot and wristing it over Ward's blocker to level the score at 2.
Neither side managed to break through as the final horn sounded with both sides tied at a 2-2 aggregate. Up next, Luleå will play hosts to Frölunda who will travel to northern Sweden next week for the Return Game.
