- Stavanger temporarily won 2nd place in Group E, but both Ilves & Stavanger ultimately eliminated
- Ilves outshot Stavanger 36-21
- Dan Kissel scored the winning goal with 12:51 to play
The Stavanger Oilers did all they good to secure a berth in the Champions Hockey League Round of 16 with a 4-2 home-ice win over Ilves Tampere, but despite their best efforts, the result of the Fribourg-Gottéron - Red Bull Salzburg game ended up knocking them out of the final 16.
The game was tied 1-1 after the first period and 2-2 after the second before Dan Kissel scored the winning goal on a fortunate bounce in the third period, followed by a late empty-netter. Henrik Holm was brilliant in the Stavanger goal, stopping 33 of 35 shots.
Through the first 15 minutes, each team had a powerplay but Ilves had many more chances to score. They finally broke through at 15:57 when Jani Nyman carried the puck into the Oilers zone and fired a wrist shot that beat Holm to the glove side. But it took Stavanger just 16 seconds to tie it, with Thomas Berg Paulsen sending a nice pass into the slot for Tommy Kristiansen to chip in.
After Ilves held the edge in play in the first, the second period was a lot more even but, again, each team scored once. Just seconds shy of the game’s midpoint, the Oilers took their first lead of the game off an attacking zone faceoff. Kristiansen scored his second, deflecting Daniel Rokseth’s shot from the point.
With 4:38 to play in the middle frame, Ilves evened it back up when the Oilers were unable to clear their zone. Joona Ikonen pounced on a loose puck in the slot and fired a low wrister that beat Holm to the stick side.
With 12:51 to play, Stavanger gained their lead back when a shot from deep in the corner hit the arm of Marek Langhamer and fell in behind the Ilves goalie. Stavanger then had a chance to widen the lead on the powerplay but gave up a shorthanded breakaway to Ikonen, who was denied by Holm.
Ilves put on enormous pressure in the last couple of minutes but were unable to score, and Colton Beck put the game away with an empty-net goal with 40 seconds to play.
